The Vocabulary of Consumerism

Sceptical (Adj) Ragu-ragu. Not easily convinced; having doubts or reservations.
Innovative (Adj) Inovatif. Featuring new methods; advanced and original.
Genuine (Adj) Tulen/Asli. Truly what something is said to be; authentic.
Blow away (Phrasal Verb) Sangat kagum. To impress someone greatly or overwhelm them.
Bargain (Noun) Barang murah. Something bought or offered for sale much more cheaply than is usual.
Splash out (Phrasal Verb) Berbelanja besar. To spend a lot of money on something pleasant but unnecessary.

The “Past before the Past” ⏳

The Past Perfect tells us which action happened first when we are talking about two events in the past.

Tense Function Example
Past Perfect Simple Focuses on the completion of an action before another. “When I arrived at the mall, the sale had finished.”
Past Perfect Continuous Focuses on the duration or continuity before another action. “They had been queuing for 3 hours before the store opened.”

Key Time Markers

Look for these words in exams: Before, after, by the time, until, already, for, since.

Example: “By the time I saved enough money, the laptop had sold out.”

Writing a Product Review

The 4-Step Review Structure

  1. Introduction: What is the product? What was the hype/expectation?
  2. Description: How does it work? Is it high-tech or simple?
  3. Pros & Cons: What are the strengths and weaknesses?
  4. Conclusion/Verdict: Would you recommend it? Is it worth the price?
Useful Phrases:
• “It is worth every penny…”
• “I was pleasantly surprised by…”
• “One major drawback is…”
• “Overall, it is a game-changer for…”
