HIGH-TECH WORLD

Form 5 English: Chapter 11 | Technology & Innovation

Types of Power Generation

How do we produce the electricity that powers our modern devices? Here are the 6 main methods discussed in this chapter:

1
Solar Power: Produced by capturing sunlight using solar panels. Clean and renewable.
2
Wind Power: Uses large turbines to capture the movement of the air (wind).
3
Hydroelectric: Generated by using running or falling water (usually from dams).
4
Nuclear Power: Created by splitting uranium atoms in a controlled environment.
5
Fossil Fuel: The traditional method—burning oil, coal, or gas. High pollution.
6
Geothermal: Uses steam coming from deep under the ground to turn turbines.

Invention Spotlight: The SOCCKET

What is it?

The SOCCKET is a portable, electricity-generating soccer ball. It was invented to help people in developing countries who lack access to stable electricity.

Kinetic Energy

As the ball is kicked, it stores kinetic energy (energy from movement) inside a small generator.

The Result

Just 30 minutes of play can generate enough electricity to power a small LED lamp for 3 hours!

Did you know? This invention proves that technology doesn’t always have to be high-cost to change lives. It uses simple physics to solve a major world problem.

The Dark Side: E-Waste

Our obsession with new gadgets (gadgets and devices) has created a global crisis called Electronic Waste or E-Waste.

Toxic Chemicals

Old computers and phones contain lead, mercury, and arsenic. When thrown in landfills, these leak into the soil and water.

Short Lifespan

Companies often design products to break or become outdated quickly (planned obsolescence), forcing us to buy new ones.

How to help?

  • Repair: Fix your device instead of buying a new one.
  • Recycle: Take old tech to specialized e-waste recycling centers.
  • Donate: Pass on working tech to those in need.

Grammar Focus

1. The Causative Form

Used when we don’t do something ourselves, but we arrange for someone else to do it for us.

Subject + Have/Get + Object + Past Participle
“I had my phone repaired yesterday.”
(I didn’t fix it; a technician did it for me.)
“We are having a solar panel installed next week.”

2. Wish & If Only

Used to express regrets or things we want to be different.

A. To express a desire for change in the present:

Wish/If Only + Past Simple
“I wish I had more money to buy that laptop.” (But I don’t have it now).

B. To express a regret about the past:

Wish/If Only + Past Perfect
“I wish I had charged my phone last night.” (But I didn’t, and now it’s dead).

C. To express a complaint or desire for someone else to change:

Wish/If Only + Would
“I wish you would stop reading my text messages!”
