HAPPY TO HELP!

Form 5 Chapter 12: Comprehensive Language Guide

1. Question Tags (Penyoalan Ekor)

Question tags are small questions at the end of statements. They are used to check information or ask for agreement.

The Golden Rule:

If the statement is POSITIVE, the tag must be NEGATIVE.

If the statement is NEGATIVE, the tag must be POSITIVE.

Statement Type Example Tag
Positive (Verb to be) She is a volunteer, isn’t she?
Negative (Verb to be) They aren’t begging, are they?
Positive (Past Simple) He helped the blind man, didn’t he?
Negative (Past Simple) You didn’t see the stray cat, did you?
Language Tip: For “I am”, the tag is “aren’t I?”.
Example: “I am late to the charity event, aren’t I?

2. Reflexive Pronouns

We use reflexive pronouns when the subject and the object of the verb are the same person or thing.

I → myself He → himself She → herself They → themselves We → ourselves

Common Uses in Chapter 12:

  • Look after: “Old people can no longer look after themselves.”
  • Blame: “The father blamed himself for the accident.”
  • By + Reflexive: (Means “alone”). “The student fixed the computer by herself.”

3. Compounds (Any/Some/No/Wh-)

Compounds are used to refer to people, things, or places without saying exactly who or what they are.

Type Usage & Example
Anyone / Someone People. “Did anyone send a message today?”
Whatever Anything. “Whatever you do, don’t forget to donate.”
Wherever Any place. “Wherever the homeless man went, people avoided him.”
Language Tip: Words like someone, everyone, anyone are always followed by a SINGULAR verb.
Correct: “Everyone knows…”
Wrong: “Everyone know…”

4. Advanced Sentence Structures

To score high in your writing (CEFR Level B2/C1), use these structures found in Chapter 12:

A. It’s high time + Past Simple

Used to say that something should have happened already.

“It’s high time the ambulance arrived!”

*Note: Even though it refers to the present, we use the Past Simple verb.

B. Not only… but also

Used to add more information or emphasize two related points.

Not only are people living longer, but also fewer babies are being born.”

C. Rather than

Used to show preference or choice instead of something else.

“Most old people would rather stay in their own homes than go into a nursing home.”
