๐ฃ Venice: A City in Danger?
Venice, Italy
A beautiful city built on water.
Today, Venice has a big problem. Many locals, particularly the young, are leaving the city. Why is this happening?
- ๐ฐ Expensive Property: Homes in Venice are very expensive. It’s difficult for young people to buy their own homes.
- ๐ธ Millions of Tourists: Venice welcomes millions of visitors annually. The large number of people in the streets can make daily life difficult for residents.
- ๐ผ Job Challenges: Finding a job is hard. If someone doesn’t want to be a gondolier or work with tourists, there are very few other jobs.
Why do people stay?
“I know that it’s a very special gift to live in a city such as Venice… I can’t imagine living anywhere else.”
โ Giovanni dal Missier (Venice Local)

โ๏ธ Writing: Informal Letters
When replying to an informal letter from a friend, you need to use a friendly tone, respond to their news, and maybe make suggestions or accept an invitation.
“I’m so glad to hear that…”
“That’s wonderful news!”
“I was sorry to hear about…”
“I’d love to come to your new house.”
“Thanks for inviting me, I’ll definitely be there.”
“Why don’t we paint the walls blue?”
“How about buying some new furniture?”
Thanks for your letter. I’m so glad to hear that you finally moved into your new house!
Thanks for inviting me to stay for the weekend. I’d absolutely love to come.
You asked about decorating your room. Why don’t you paint it a bright colour, like yellow? How about we go shopping for some posters when I visit?
Write back soon!
Best wishes,
Alex
