First Conditional: Real Possibility

Used for things that are likely to happen in the future.

IF + Present Simple โ†’ Will + Infinitive

โ€ข We won’t play football if it’s still snowing later.

โ“ Second Conditional

Hypothetical / Imaginary Situations

Used for things that are unlikely to happen now or in the future.

IF + Past Simple โ†’ Would + Infinitive

โ€ข If we ran in marathons, we would know how challenging they are.

We often use the Second Conditional to give advice using the phrase “If I were you…”

“If I were you, I wouldn’t try fixing the roof myself!”

Explain why someone does something.
