Past Simple For actions that started and finished at a specific time in the past. It’s a completed action. โ€ข I ate a huge burger yesterday.

โ€ข We didn’t go to the restaurant.
Past Continuous For actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past. Often interrupted by a Past Simple action. โ€ข I was eating dinner when the phone rang.
โ€ข They were cooking from 6 PM to 8 PM.

Key Difference: Use Past Simple for short, finished actions. Use Past Continuous (was/were + ing) to set the background scene or for long, ongoing actions in the past.

Used to / Would

For habits or states in the past that are no longer true today.

  • “Mum would read me stories when I was young.”
  • “Tammy didn’t use to eat meat when she was younger.”

Be / Get used to

Be used to: You are accustomed to it. It is normal for you now.
Get used to: The process of becoming accustomed to something.

  • “Geoff is used to cooking for lots of people.”
  • “Sooner or later, you will get used to your new school.”
Meaning / Situation Transformed Sentence (Workbook Example)
We don’t eat out during the week any more. We used to eat out during the week.
Cooking for lots of people is nothing new for Geoff. Geoff is used to cooking for lots of people.
Looking after a baby is something new for my sister. My sister is not used to looking after a baby.

When writing a review for a restaurant or food, using multiple adjectives makes your writing interesting and descriptive. But they must be in the correct order!

The Royal Order of Adjectives:

1. Opinion (Delicious) 2. Size (Massive) 3. Age (Fresh) 4. Shape (Round) 5. Colour (Brown) 6. Origin (Canadian) 7. Material (Wooden) Noun

Tips for a Great Restaurant Review:

  • Set the Scene: Describe the atmosphere. Is it noisy, cozy, or elegant?
  • Describe the Food: Don’t just say “good”. Use words like spicy, savory, well-balanced, colossal, delicious.
  • Mention the Service: Were the waiters polite, fast, or slow?
  • Give a Recommendation: End by telling the reader if they should visit. “I highly recommend it!” or “It’s not worth the money.”
